Subclass in Lineage 2 is a second character living inside your main one. It shares the same account, uses the same equipment, and starts at level 40. It might seem optional, but without it your character misses a significant portion of its potential. Here's how it works and what to pick.
What subclass gives you
- ▸SP from leveling your subclass goes into a shared pool - you spend it on learning enhanced versions of your main class skills.
- ▸Each subclass levels to 80 (in the HF/IL era), generating a huge amount of SP.
- ▸At subclass levels 65, 70, and 75 you unlock Subclass Certifications - passive bonuses for your main character.
- ▸Up to three subclasses per character. Each additional one brings more SP and more certifications.
How to unlock subclass
The main requirements: level 75 on your main class and a completed quest. The quest starts at the NPC Librarian of Babel, found in Rune Township and some other major cities. It involves collecting materials from specific mobs and defeating several named monsters.
Without Noblesse: switching to your subclass costs you 4 levels. With Noblesse: you switch with no penalty. If you haven't gotten Noblesse yet, get it before you start leveling a subclass.
Many private servers simplify or remove the subclass quest entirely. Some grant subclass automatically alongside Noblesse. Check the server FAQ or Discord before spending time on the quest chain.
Which subclass to choose
This depends on your main class and what you need - SP, specific certifications, or situational utility.
| Main Class | Recommended Sub | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Mage (SM, SS, SpH) | Dark Avenger or Hell Knight | HP pool and CON certification |
| Archer (HE, SR, PR) | Overlord | CON and STR certifications, CP buff |
| Physical DD (Glad, Tyr) | Prophet or Swordsinger | Emergency self-buff option |
| Healer / Support | Any warrior class | STR certification for subclass DPS |
| Tank | Any mage class | INT certification, M.Def boost |
Subclass Certifications: the real reason to bother
At subclass levels 65, 70, and 75 you choose one of several certifications - passive bonuses applied to your main character. Examples include increased HP, STR or INT bonus, and attack speed improvements.
The specific certifications available depend on your subclass type. This is why it's worth deciding what your main class actually needs before picking a subclass randomly.
How to level subclass fast
- ▸Subclass starts at level 40, not level 1. The first 20 levels go quickly.
- ▸Best zones for subclass are the same as for a main character at that level range. Farm adena at the same time.
- ▸At x5+ rates, subclass to 75-80 takes 2-4 days of active play.
- ▸Remember: SP from subclass only applies to your main character after you switch back.
You can't take a subclass of the same class type as your main. A Dark Elf sword fighter can't take another Dark Elf fighter as a sub. There are also racial combination restrictions - check what's actually available from the NPC before committing.
